As we face these trying times it is easy to get swept into the hysteria that surrounds COVID-19. Coronavirus is real, and try as we might, we do not have control over it. However, we do have control over how we respond to it. So, how can we change the way we communicate to manage our current stress and anxiety?
1. Ensure that you’re sharing accurate information.
Knowledge-sharing throughout these turbulent and uncertain times can help to ease some of the stress that we might be experiencing. We can alleviate stress by utilizing various methods of communication. However, while social media tools like Facebook can be effective methods of sharing information, it’s easy to find ourselves reading false information on platforms like Facebook. If social media is your communication method of choice, opt for something like LinkedIn or ensure that the information that you’re reading is correct before sharing with family, friends, and coworkers. As the CDC notes, sharing accurate information can help to alleviate stress.
2. Learn how your coworkers communicate best.
When it comes to work communication, most offices have gone completely remote, which can be a whole different obstacle for you and your team to manage. Coworkers might process information differently depending on which method of communication you use. Some may enjoy reading a lengthy and detailed email, others prefer a short text. Get to know best practice for each of your peers. Sometimes alleviating stress might be as simple as changing your communication method. So get to know your coworkers’ communication styles to ensure that there’s no unnecessary added stress during this time period.
3. Talk about things other than just your stressors.
While it is critical to share as much information regarding COVID-19 as possible, it is also important to recognize that this is a very stressful time for every one of your coworkers. Someone might live with an elderly person while someone else might have a pre-existing condition that makes them more susceptible to Coronavirus. The CDC recommends to connect with others and talk to people you trust about some of your concerns and emotions. During this unprecedented crisis it is crucial to communicate with your team and your family. Sometimes a quick emotional check-in can make all the difference in alleviating some of the stress and anxiety you may be experiencing.
